Holistic tends to be the buzzword of the past few years. Everyone is hopping onboard new trends, whether it’s veganism or zero waste. These trends are part of a general worldwide movement to live life more ethically and sustainably with health and balance at the forefront. Finding balance is not an easy task; many people often dive into things without thinking about the consequences and then quickly retreat when it becomes too much. When someone finds balance, they tend to feel healthier and happier, and it is usually much more straightforward to achieve a holistic life than you would think.

Define “Holistic” For Yourself

Holistic living is different from person to person. Not everyone’s holistic life will be the same, and for that reason, you must make an effort to define “holistic” for yourself. Doing this allows you to gradually adopt holistic habits, which can help make it easier to integrate into your life. As you want a balance between the natural world and yourself, you should be thinking of new ways to connect with nature, whether it be adding more plant-based food to your diet or spending more time in nature. As you strive to become more holistically focused, your new integration with nature will help produce a balance between your mind, spirit, and body.

Start Small

Like with many life changes, when adopting holistic habits, start small. You don’t want to drastically change your entire life overnight as it defeats the purpose. If you’re going to live holistically, you need to feel at peace, and forcing yourself into new behaviors and habits is anything but peaceful. Set small goals for yourself. Maybe you want to start with a month of veganism or aim to meditate three times a week. You can also create a vision board for your holistic life by cutting out photos from magazines or books with images that help you envision a more balanced lifestyle. You have a ton of time to get this right, so you mustn’t put too much stress on yourself.

Finding Balance Is Up To You

Your spirit, body, and mind are closely interconnected with the world around you. The places you go, the people you see, and the activities you engage in day-to-day all contribute to your physical and mental state. While some aspects of your life may benefit your mind like reading or working, they sometimes don’t provide you with benefits to the physical body. In contrast, exercise can do wonders for the body, but too much may be detrimental to energy levels and cognition, lowering your spirit. Many people often can feel when there is a lack of balance, but rather than gradually adjusting their behaviors, they make drastic decisions, which can further the imbalance.

While you may strive to look for balance in the external world around you, joining new exercise classes or work training programs, these are not going to be what balances you. For you to be balanced, you must be mindful of your behavior and thoughts. Mindfulness is a practice that does not come easy to a vast majority of people. While people can pinpoint when they aren’t feeling good, they often can’t identify the specific aspect of their life, making them feel unwell. When you become mindful, you are aware of how things make you feel, and you pay attention to your reactions not only mentally but physically. Through this practice, you will gain insight into what brings you up and things that decrease your spirits. With prolonged practice, you can tailor your behaviors and environment so that you feel fulfilled.

If you are currently practicing techniques to help you stay mindful like yoga and meditation, take the lessons you learn in your classes and practice into your everyday life. Remember to take deep breaths and live in the present moment. Dwelling on past events you can’t control, and a future you can’t predict is not only a waste of time, but it is also mentally and physically exhausting.
